Our Story

1957-1967

It started off on August 4, 1957, in a tent on the corner of Church and Broad Street. From that humble beginning, a storefront was rented on August 25, 1957, at 214 S. Church Street to conduct service until property could be found for a permanent place of worship. God continued to bless and move on that small group of saints. A small basement church was available for sale at 1001 N. Spring Street for $5,500. They prayed and sacrificed both time and money to purchase the property on October 30, 1958. Because of their willingness to step out in faith, God honored it and poured out His blessings.

1967-1969

In 1967, the church looked to the future to expand. God had brought more families in, and they decided to sell the property at 1001 N. Spring Street to Phillip Swinford, who was with the Emmanuel Church of Christ. They purchased 3.5 acres and a 2-story home just inside the city limits, in the fast growing Bradyville Pike area, for $11,900.

1969-1974

On August 1, 1969, Rev. Phillip Swinford was welcomed into the UPCI which resulted in two UPCI churches in Murfreesboro. However, on October 31, 1969, Rev. Robin Beagle resigned as pastor of the church on Bradyville Pike and recommend that the congregation return to the church at Spring Street. Once again, God had His hand on our saints as they moved back to the Spring Street location.

1974-1988

The summer of 1974 brought a great change in the leadership of our church. Rev. Marvin Tidrick was elected pastor of our congregation. He and his family moved to Murfreesboro from Grants, New Mexico. Bro. Tidrick arrived at a pivotal time, because the congregation was outgrowing the sanctuary. The property was sold on Bradyville Pike, and plans were put into motion to expand at the Spring Street location. Property was bought next to the church to meet the city’s requirements for parking. A bond program was put into place for $60,000, and a metal building was purchased to be erected over the building’s basement. Before the building could be completed, God provided a 20 soul revival to send hands and finances to help complete the project.

1988-1992

In 1988, the congregation had once again outgrown the capacity of the building on Spring Street. Being locked in by the houses around the church, the board decided to look for new property on which to build a new facility. Property was located at 1800 New Lascassas Pike. There were 11.86 acres for sale at the asking price of $300,000. The church prayed and sought direction from God on this property. He again proved His faithfulness by allowing us to negotiate the selling price down to $225,000.

1992

April 3, 1992 was a sad day for the church. On that day, pastor, Marvin Tidrick, died suddenly. Not long after receiving the news of his best friend’s death, the founding pastor, Rev. Manuel Tharp, also passed away.  It was a very difficult time for the church. The following Sunday, Jack Tidrick introduced the new pastor, Rev. Phil DePriest. Bro. DePriest had been the associate pastor for some time, but now had large shoes to fill as he lead us into the next chapter of the church history.

1992-1994

Having completely outgrown the current capacity of the Spring Street facility, construction began on a new building at 1800 New Lascassas Pike in December 1994. The first service in the new sanctuary was held on August 27.
