The Duty of Freedom

Jul 5, 2026    Pastor Kevin Allen

This powerful message challenges us to reconsider what true freedom really means and what it demands of us. Drawing from Luke 17:7-10, we're confronted with an uncomfortable truth: not everything we do for God deserves applause or recognition. Some things are simply our duty. Just as America's founding fathers understood that signing the Declaration of Independence came with tremendous responsibility and potential sacrifice, we must recognize that spiritual freedom purchased at Calvary comes with obligations we cannot ignore. The sermon draws a stark parallel between the 250-year celebration of American independence and the eternal freedom Christ purchased with His blood. We're reminded that freedom without responsibility breeds entitlement, and this dangerous mindset has crept into our churches. When we begin treating God's blessings as something owed to us rather than graciously given, we lose sight of the cross. The message calls us back to the language of duty, faithfulness, and watchfulness. Like the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier who stand watch regardless of weather or circumstance, we're called to guard what has been entrusted to us: our families, our faith, our convictions, and our relationship with God. This isn't about legalism but about understanding that what we don't defend, we will eventually lose.
